Bell Ringers

This school year, we will be doing three activities during our daily bell ringer. Every Monday – Thursday, I will give students one vocabulary word from a list of the words that most frequently appear on the ACT. I will also give students a cultural literacy term. These are allusions that students might encounter as they read literature on the college level and beyond. These allusions will be categorized to help students recall them (Biblical, historical, literary, and mythological).

On Fridays, students will take a short quiz over the week’s vocabulary and cultural literacy. The quizzes will be comprehensive, so students should continue to look over prior terms.

Our final activity will be daily grammar practice. Every Monday, I will present students with a sentence. On Monday, students will identify the parts of speech. On Tuesday, students will identify sentence parts. Wednesday, we will focus on clauses, types, and purposes. Thursdays will focus on capitalization and punctuation. Every Friday, we will conclude the sentence work with a sentence diagramming activity.
